April is National Poetry Month so I am celebrating with 11 must-have children’s poetry books!
I have tried to include poetry on a weekly if not daily basis in our home. Whether it is a quick reading at the beginning of the school day or a poem posted in the bathroom where someone might take the time to read it, poetry is a part of our life.
I know a lot of people are intimidated by poetry. I wrote a post about “How to Fall in Love with Poetry in 10 Minutes a Day” about several great (and short!) poetry podcasts to help you learn to love poems.
Also, you can discover 30 more ways to celebrate National Poetry Month here.
Today in honor of National Poetry Month I wanted to share some more of my favorite poetry resources for all ages.

Favorite Poetry Anthologies for Children
This is my favorite book for everyday poetry. There are beautiful poems, silly poems, creepy poems, nature poems — just so many poems!
Selected by Jack Prelutsky–a great children’s poet– this books aims to please parents and children and worth every penny.
This book features a selection of the very best poems worth knowing. It also has lovely illustrations by Jon J Muth.
This light-hearted collection features short poems about animals by a variety of poets accompanied by Eric Carles signature style illustrations. My kids loved to pick poems from this book for their poetry reading time.
A book of beautiful poems by one of the most enchanting illustrators-WIN! Featuring nearly 200 poems accompanied by lovely child-friendly illustrations, this book is a fantastic edition to your book shelf. He also has a version of A Child’s Garden of Verses by Robert Louis Stevenson.
This classic anthology features more than 700 poems! It is a favorite in many classrooms and a worth collection for any poetry lover-to-be.
Ambleside Online has gathered a lovely collection of poems of more than 200 classic poems that are divided by month so that many of the titles fit with the season. Other favorites are also included. You can just view online or print as needed. We have used this over and over again.
Favorite Children’s Poets
In addition to anthologies featuring multiple poets, there are also lovely poetry books for children featuring a single poet.
This series features multiple poems by a single poet such as Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes and Robert Frost. The series is a great way to highlight a single author and discover the range of their writing. There is also another similar series called Poetry for Kids that has many additional poets.
8. Shel Silverstein
Perhaps the most famous modern poet writing for children, Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic and Falling Up are must-haves for any parent who wants their child to fall in love with poems and wordplay.
9. Jack Prelutsky
10. Robert Louis Stevenson
A perennial favorite, Stevenson is famous for his poetry as well as his adventure tales such as Treasure Island. He really captures the imagination and wonder of childhood in his simple poems. There are dozens of versions with different illustrations.
11. A.A. Milne
Of course, there are hundreds of wonderful poets you could introduce your children to and I hope you will. Poetry anthologies are a great way to do that.
Just open it up, read a poem out loud, and enjoy!
